It was quick and easy at the Oregon City Council meeting held Tuesday night.
Julie Bassett with Together for Taft gave a presentation about her organization’s efforts to keep the Lorado Taft Campus open after NIU announced that it won’t continue to use the historic area located in Oregon, situated on the Rock River, just outside the city limits. The campus is known for its outdoor education programs and its history as the Eagle’s Nest Art Colony.
City Manager Darrin DeHaan spoke of the recent agreement between the city and the Chamber of Commerce allowing them to vacate their current location, sell the building, and take up residence at the Sara Phelps Plaza.
DeHaan went on to say that it benefits both parties with the Chamber keeping an eye on the building while drastically reducing the Chamber’s expenses. City residents are still encouraged to use the plaza to have lunch or a weekend party which DeHaan said that was its original intention.
In other news, two motions were passed including amending the zoning map for several parcels on 2nd Street to change from industrial to residential.
