The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office say they have received some call as of late regarding potential blacktop or sealcoating scams.
A “blacktop scam” or “sealcoating scam” typically refers to a fraudulent scheme where individuals or companies offer asphalt paving or repair services at a low price, but deliver subpar work, use deceptive tactics, and demand excessive payment.
These scams often target homeowners and businesses, particularly the elderly, and can involve various misrepresentations about materials, pricing, and the need for immediate work.
To protect yourself from blacktop scams:
- Verify Credentials: Always verify the contractor’s license, insurance, and business information.
- Get Multiple Quotes: Obtain quotes from several reputable contractors before making a decision.
- Get Everything in Writing: Insist on a detailed written contract outlining the scope of work, materials, costs, and payment terms.
- Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Offers: Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true, especially those involving leftover materials or pressure to act quickly.
- Check Reviews and References: Look for online reviews and contact references to assess the contractor’s reputation.
- Don’t Pay Upfront: Avoid paying large sums upfront.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a scam, report it to the authorities or consumer protection agencies.
